Portland General Electric considering biomass to replace coal at Oregon power plant
In Oregon, Portland General Electric Co. has indicated an interest in torrefaction-based biomass as a replacement for coal-fired power at its Boardman power plant, which it may shut down by 2020. Another option: construction of a combined-cycle natural gas plant adjacent to the Boardman plant, at Carty Reservoir.
PGE has proposed a plan to the Oregon [...]

Colorado awards $500,000 in renewable energy research grants; three biomass projects in the money
In Colorado, the state Department of Agriculture’s Advancing Colorado’s Renewable Energy program announced $500,000 in research grants to eleven projects.
Among the winners: $25,000 for Northeast Colorado RC&D in Morgan County to determine the feasibility of developing a mixed feedstock food and ag waste digester near the Fort Morgan Industrial Park. $50,000 was awarded to Flux [...]
“Torrefied Wood, A Bio-Energy Option That Is Ready to Go”: A Biomass Digest Special Report
By Biomass Digest correspondent Tim Sklar
Overview
In 2007 the Congress passed legislation that mandated producing 16 billion gallons per year of 2nd generation biofuels from cellulosic biomass by Year 2022. Although many experts believe this “Renewable Fuels Standard” (RFS) could still be attained, progress toward that goal has bogged down. Processes under development for producing 2nd [...]
POIC Sabah CEO says politics, economics frustrating biomass-to-power in Malaysia
In Malaysia, POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd CEO Dr Pang Teck Wai said that there is sufficient palm fruit waste to provide power and steam to the complex of palm industries at POIC Lahad Datu, but that the lack of a carbon emissions regime removed the incentive to secure long-term supply of feedstock. He said that, [...]
