Malaysian energy minister asks palm oil producers to make green power from waste; hints at mandate

In Malaysia, Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui has called on oil palm plantations to assist in energy conservation by burning waste oil palm fruit to generate power for their own systems. The minister said that power shortages in Sabah state could be overcome with substations generating up to 20 MW using mobile power generating sets.

The minister said that conversion of waste palm fruit to biomass-based power may be mandated by the government. In Sabah, there are three biomass plants currently supplying power to the grid: Kina Biopower, Seguntor Bioenergy, and TSH Bioenergy  in Tawau.
