Drax to cut emissions by 80 percent by delivering biomass via train to 290 MW power plant
In the UK, Drax announced a deal to reduce farm to furnace emissions by up to 80 percent by shifting transit of 1 million tonnes of biomass to train. Under an agreement with First GBRf, four trains per day will run from Port of Tyne to Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire.
Drax has set a target of increasing its biomass component to 12.5 percent by the middle of 2010. The plant will be supplied by pellets generated from farmer-supplied biomass. The pellets will be manufactured onsite at a $1.2 billion proposed facility that will serve the 290 MW plant.
