Ceres, Choren, partner to optimize crops for fuels, chemicals, power
In California, Ceres announced an agreement with Choren, to optimize energy crops for thermochemical conversion to advanced low-carbon biofuels. $795 million biomass power project to break ground in South Carolina
In South Carolina, groundbreaking is scheduled Monday for a $795 million biomass plant that will produce 20 MW of power, plus steam that will be utilized at the Savannah River nuclear facility. The project will utilize 322,000 tons of wood waste and shredded tyres and is scheduled to open in December 2011.

Buena Vista Biomass Power, Sacramento Municipal Utility District sign 20-year, 16 MW deal

In the UK, the national government announced a $2.48 million set of grants in the third round of projects that will be awarded support under the Bio-energy Infrastructure Scheme.

Inbicon opens 1.4 Mgy demonstration cellulosic ethanol plant in Denmark; supplies animal feed, lignin pellets
In Denmark, Prince Joachim inaugurated the 1.4 Mgy, demonstration-scale Inbicon cellulosic ethanol plant in Kalundborg, which is utilizing wheat straw as its initial feedstock. The plant is the largest cellulosic ethanol facility in Europe, and second globally only to the KL Energy project in Upton, WY.

PKEC signs MOU for 30 MW biomass power station in the Philippines
In the Philippines, the Philippine-Korean Renewable Energy Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding with the city of Puerto Princesa to establish a 30 MW biomass facility, that will utilize coconut and coconut waste as feedstock.
The project will establish a coconut plantation 20 miles north of the city in Barangay Santa Cruz.
US has 50 million new acres available for energy crops: report
In Oklahoma, researchers at Oklahoma State University have concluded that 50 million acres are available in the US for conversion to energy grasses, including cropland, idle land and pasture.

Udall, Risch introduce “National Forest Insect and Disease Emergency Act” with biomass fast-tracking provisions
In Washington, Senator Mark Udall of Colorado and Senator James Risch of Idaho introduced the National Forest Insect and Disease Emergency Act to provide tax incentives to companies that harvest trees that were killed by beetle infestations.
